The Tokyo Stock Exchange is Asia's largest bourse and is seen as a key litmus test for how U.S. and European markets will respond to the downgrade when trading commences on Monday.

In addition to fears of economic instability in the U.S. and Europe, Japan's markets have been dragged down in recent days by the steadily strengthening yen, which has pinched profits at exporters, making their goods more expensive on global markets. Many analysts have suggested that the S&P downgrade could further weaken the dollar against the yen, as investors dump more U.S. assets in response.
